Help Support Our California Controller Lawsuit

Public spending should be public information. Period. It’s official.

California is the only state left that refuses to produce their line-by-line state checkbook to our auditors at OpenTheBooks.com.

We sued California State Controller Betty Yee to begin the process of forcing open the state checkbook.

Controller Yee admits to paying 49 million bills last year, yet refused to produce a single transaction subject to our sunshine request.

Read our lawsuit and sign our petition to demand transparency in California.

We want to know exactly what California is trying to hide. It shouldn't take subpoenas and a lawsuit to open the books.

Since 2013, we’ve filed sunshine requests with the California controller for the state checkbook. Each time our requests were rejected without citing a single exemption of the state’s open records law.

Oddly, the controller’s main arguments rest on a claim that they can’t locate a single one of the 49 million bills she paid last year!

California wants to hide their spending from taxpayers, citizens, media, watchdogs, academics – everybody. They are testing our will and wallet.

Thankfully, we’ve joined forces with an aggressive team of lawyers at the nonprofit good government watchdog organization, Cause of Action Institute in Washington, D.C.

Help us force California to open the state checkbook! Read our complaint and sign our petition.
